Posted on: 10 Jan 2018

December 2017: Londis is delighted to announce the launch of Cycle for Joy 2018 in aid of its charity partner Pieta House. They were joined by Pieta House ambassador and Irish Rugby International Jack McGrath to launch the third year of this partnership which has to date raised €200,000 for Pieta House.

Following on from the great success of Jump for Joy in 2016 and Climb for Joy in 2017, the retail group are planning a charity cycle for 2018 which will see a group cycle the 43km Greenway from Achill to Westport on 19th May in order to raise more funds for Pieta House.

Londis has also pledged to donate 1c to Pieta House that every time a customer buys selected Londis own brand products.

Londis is a community retailer and it is aware of the important role that Pieta House plays in Irish communities by providing a free and therapuetic approach to people who are in suicidal distress and those with mental health issues.

According to Conor Hayes, Londis Sales Director, “Londis will continue our support of Pieta House in 2018 and hope to raise even more funds and awareness for this worthy cause. We are excited to announce Cycle for Joy on Saturday 19th May 2018 in Mayo and hope that it will help increase the profile of the fantastic work that is carried out by Pieta House and also raise more funds to keep these services running.

“As with all great partnerships there is a benefit for Londis. We know that the 20-35 age group are taking huge steps in breaking down the stigma around mental health and opening up this conversation. They are interested in talking about this and doing what they can to help others with mental health issues. So it is a great fit for the brand to be championing Pieta House.”

Londis began its partnership with the charity in 2016 when over 30 retailers put their fears aside and undertook parachute jumps for the Londis Jump for Joy event on 14th May 2016 at The Irish Parachute Club, in Clonbullogue, Co Offaly. The initiative raised over €27,000 for Pieta House.

In 2017, Londis retailers took part in Climb for Joy for Pieta House and climbed Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil in Co Kerry on 27th May 2017 raising over €110,000 for the charity.

Speaking about these initiatives, Marie Peelo, Deputy Director Funding & Advocacy for Pieta House said: “We would like to extend our thanks to Londis for partnering with Pieta House. Without this kind of support, we would be unable to provide our services to those in need and highlight the issue of mental health in Ireland. Londis is making a real difference to those with mental health issues through this partnership.”

Pieta House is located in nine locations around the country; Ballyfermot, Lucan, Finglas, Cork, Tralee, Limerick, Roscrea, Waterford and Tuam and their goal is to have a Pieta House within 100kms of every person in Ireland.

There are currently 130 Londis stores across the country, providing employment for 2,000 people locally.
