Posted on: 16 Jul 2019

The latest survey of fresh meat in Irish supermarkets has revealed that Aldi sells the highest proportion of fresh Irish meat labelled with the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Mark.

Bord Bia’s Retail Audit on its Quality Assurance Mark found that 91.5% of Aldi’s fresh meat range displayed the Quality Assurance Mark, giving Aldi the highest ranking of the nine supermarkets and convenience store chains surveyed.

The comprehensive in-store survey calculated the percentage of individual bacon, beef, burgers, chicken, cooked ham, duck, lamb, pork, rashers, sausages and turkey products available carrying the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Mark.

Irish consumers purchase on average the following amount of Bord Bia Assured fresh meat in these categories:

  • Over 380,000 units of Bord Bia Assured beef including over 29,000 units of Specially Selected steaks
  • Over 110,000 units of Bord Bia Assured pork
  • Over 60,000 whole Bord Bia Assured chickens

Aldi’s Group Buying Director John Curtin commented, “We are well-known for our commitment to shoppers that we will never be beaten on price. We are equally well-known for our support of Irish producers and for offering the very best of Bord Bia Quality Assured Irish meat. We only source our fresh meat from farms in the Republic of Ireland that are certified under the Bord Bia scheme.”

Aldi is committed to growing its Irish supply base and increasing the number of Irish products available in its stores. It is investing more than €500,000 in year two of its Grow with Aldi supplier development programme, which offers up-and-coming artisan Irish food and drink producers the chance to have their products listed in Aldi’s 138 stores. Aldi also recently increased its support for small Irish suppliers by reducing its payment terms to 14 days for suppliers that transact up to €300k annually with Aldi.

Aldi will sell over €700 million worth of Irish goods this year, sourced from Irish producers, manufacturers and suppliers across the country.
