ALDI to provide over 760 customer bike parking spaces nationally by the end of the year

Posted on: 19 Aug 2022

ALDI Ireland announced it will be providing 764 bike parking spaces for customers nationally by the end of the year.

ALDI currently offers bike parking across the majority of its 150 Irish stores and has committed to ensuring customer bike parking facilities will be a feature of all its new stores. ALDI is investing €320 million over the next three years in the opening of 30 new stores.

The most recent survey by independent cycling advocacy group Dublin Cycling Campaign ranked ALDI as having the best bike parking facilities across all supermarkets in the capital. Over half of respondents rated ALDI’s bike parking facilities as “good”, beating all other retailers surveyed.

The move to introduce more bike parking spaces across its store network is part of ALDI’s comprehensive sustainability strategy, and aims to promote a healthy, active lifestyle.

Commenting, John Curtin, ALDI Group Buying Director said: “We are committed to enabling ALDI shoppers to make healthy and active lifestyle choices by ensuring those who wish to cycle to our stores have the best facilities available. We’ll be offering 764 bike parking spaces across our stores by the end of the year, which is part of our overall sustainability strategy. So, whether customers are trying to save a bit of money on fuel costs or are looking for an environmentally friendly way to travel to our stores, they’ll find the best bike parking facilities at ALDI.”

David Timoney from Dublin Cycling Campaign said: “We are pleased to see ALDI continue to upgrade its bike parking facilities. In our supermarket bike parking survey of 2020, ALDI came out top with 52% of its stores rated as having ‘good’ bike parking facilities. Shopping by bike is a simple way of reducing traffic on our roads, reducing carbon emissions and keeping us active. The key factors which enable more people to shop by bike are more secure bike parking, more space for cargo bikes and locating bike parking closer to shop entrances. As many of us are living our lives more locally, we are using local supermarkets more often. There is a great opportunity for supermarket brands like ALDI to upgrade and enhance its customers’ shopping experience.”

ALDI has been recognised for its fantastic work in sustainability through several recent award wins, including being awarded the title of ‘Green Retailer’ at the 2022 Green Awards and being voted Ireland’s Most Sustainable Supermarket by Irish Shoppers in the Ireland RepTrak Sustainability Index 2021.

ALDI also partners with the national charity FoodCloud, providing surplus food to those who need it most. To date, ALDI has donated 2.35 million meals to FoodCloud, equating to a saving of almost €3 million while also benefiting the environment, saving an equivalent of 3.2 million tonnes of CO2.
