Lotto jackpot hat-trick! Ballinrobe shopkeeper with the Midas touch sells Wednesday’s winning €2.8 million ticket

Posted on: 02 Jul 2020

A lucky shopkeeper in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo is incredibly celebrating his third Lotto jackpot win after the National Lottery confirmed that Murphy’s newsagents sold the winning ticket for Wednesday night’s €2,824,437 Lotto jackpot.

Owner of the lucky store, Martin Murphy is overjoyed with the latest win and he has had to become accustomed to Lotto success in the past having sold two previous jackpot winning tickets in 1989 (£175,493 Punts) and again in 2015. On that occasion, he hit the headlines when he sold a winning ticket worth over €6.3 million to his brother-in-law Ger Murphy.

Murphy’s Newsagents has been serving customers in Ballinrobe for over 116 years and it was inundated with local callers on Thursday afternoon after rumours of the win started to circulate throughout the town. Beaming from ear to ear following his latest Lotto win, owner of Murphy’s store, Martin Murphy said, “Honestly, I still can’t believe it. We’re a relatively small shop in the west of Ireland and here we are again celebrating our third Lotto jackpot win. You wouldn’t believe the excitement which is coursing through Ballinrobe town right now. We are all ecstatically excited and we are thrilled that somebody in our community is now coming to terms with being over €2.8 million richer right now. It really is such a satisfying feeling knowing that we sold them the winning ticket.”

The National Lottery has confirmed that it is still waiting for the lucky ticketholder to make contact and has continued to appeal to its players in Mayo to get in touch with Lotto HQ if they have the lucky winning ticket.

Having seen his brother-in-law pick up a Lotto cheque for over €6.3 million in 2015, the lucky shopkeeper suggested that the winner should take their time to contemplate their win before rushing into any spending plans:

“I have seen first-hand how a Lotto win can change somebody’s life for the better. Whoever the winner is, they should get as much professional advice as is possible. I hope that they take some time out and gather their thoughts before they make any big plans for their win. €2.8 million is a lot of money and it will be truly life-changing so I hope that they enjoy it and make every penny count,” he said.

This latest Lotto win is the 7th jackpot win so far in 2020 with over €34 million won in jackpot prizes alone. In 2020, almost €73 million has been won in prizes in the Lotto game which includes 12 new millionaires which have been created in the Lotto and Lotto Plus games.

The winning numbers for last night’s Lotto draw are: 03, 08, 21, 34, 37, 47 and bonus number is 16.

Nearly 30 cent in every €1 spent on all National Lottery games goes back to Good Causes in the areas of sport, youth, health, welfare, education, arts, heritage and the Irish Language. In total more than €5.6 Billion has been raised for Good Causes since the National Lottery was established 33 years ago. In 2019 alone, €252 million was raised for local Good Causes in communities across Ireland.
