Oats of energy as team Flahavan’s clock up over six million steps for National Workplace Wellbeing Day

Posted on: 10 May 2021

In celebration of National Workplace Wellbeing Day on April 30th all at Flahavan’s donned their striking green and red tracksuit tops, and 64 members of the company individually headed out into the stunning Waterford countryside for their Team Step Challenge, which ultimately saw them clocking up over six million steps over the May bank holiday weekend.

Excitement was high as the participants headed out in support of the South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association. An unexpectedly bright and sunny weekend ensured they all had an extra pep in their step as they ventured out into every corner of the county as well as stepping it out along Waterford’s gorgeous Greenway.

One of the participants Dolores Troy, Accounts Department at Flahavan’s,  said “We had great fun across the entire weekend going head-to-head in our team step challenge – it was highly competitive with some teams starting out at 4am in the early morning  to clock up enough steps to beat their rivals. There was a great sense of camaraderie.  I clocked up 46,000 steps over the three days and thoroughly enjoyed it!”

An added feature of the activity saw participants capture and share stunning photos of the West Waterford landscape as they went along their way, encouraging each other to keep it going.  Everyone was a winner on the day but the four members of the Crohaun team were ultimately crowned step champions having clocked up a hefty 645,608 steps between them, while Team Anvil and Team Fauscoum clocked up a combined total of over a million steps. Meanwhile some staff members recorded exceptional personal contributions, with three individuals clocking up in excess of 100,000 steps (the equivalent of 80km) in a single day.

The Flahavan’s company has pledged to match the final amount raised by staff before making their donation to this very worthwhile local charity.

Noel Toomey, Health & Safety Manager, organised the activity and said “It’s been a very successful team-building initiative, in as much as it can be in these strange covid times.  We’re delighted to have participated in #WorkWell21, encouraging all members of our team to stay healthy and active”.

John Flahavan, himself an avid hill walker, also participated in the event, he said “I’m so proud of all the team at Flahavan’s who participated in this activity, especially those who stepped outside of their comfort zone and walked the extra mile for our National Workplace Wellbeing Day in aid of South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association, a charity very close to our hearts here in Kilmacthomas.  I’d like to sincerely thank everyone for their efforts”
