Show Me ID – Be Age OK programme encourages retailers to ensure staff engage with its free online responsible retailing training module

Show Me ID – Be Age OK, Ireland’s largest youth responsible retailing training platform, has today  launched its Spring 2022 campaign, urging Irish retailers to ensure staff are fully trained on how to prevent the sale of age-restricted goods to minors. With the lifting of restrictions on St Patrick’s Day festivities for the first time since 2019 and an extended bank holiday weekend, its expected to be a busy trading period for retail stores across Ireland.

Launching the campaign, Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Daniel Whooley emphasised the importance of training staff using the Show Me ID – Be Age OK programme. Commenting he said: “In the run up to St Patrick’s day, we’re expecting a busy period for retailers, particularly when it comes to the sale of alcohol, tobacco and National Lottery tickets. It is important that staff are fully trained in the best practice around asking for ID, refusing sales, and deescalating confrontational situations, which the Show Me ID platform provides.”

Show Me ID’s Spring campaign is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of upholding training standards on how to avoid the sale of alcohol, lottery tickets and tobacco products. The free online training module informs staff of their responsibilities when working at the point of sale and also outlines why recording a sales refusal is so important.

Commenting at the campaign launch, Store Manager of Centra Laurel Lodge, Castleknock, Mark Kenna said: “The Show Me ID training module is an invaluable tool for our staff. It helps to give them the confidence to deal with transactions involving age-restricted products and it is particularly useful when onboarding new staff members. Every new member of staff in our store takes the Show Me ID – Be Age OK training to educate them on how and when to ask for ID to ensure age-restricted products are only sold to persons over 18.”

Show Me ID has proven to be an excellent free resource for Irish retailers, with thousands of retail staff from both independent stores and retail chains completing the training. Mr Kenna added: “I would strongly encourage all Irish retailers to engage with their employees on responsible retailing by asking new and existing staff members to complete the Show Me ID – Be Age OK training module this month”.

As part of Show Me ID’s Spring campaign, retail staff who complete the training before 5pm on Tuesday, 22nd March will be entered into a draw to win one of five €100 One4All gift vouchers.
