The European Commission has launched the first-ever European Capitals of Small Retail Awards. This brand-new initiative celebrates cities that put local retail at the heart of thriving communities.
From charming small towns to bustling cities, we’re looking for places that champion small businesses, revive city centres, embrace digital and green innovation, and build vibrant local economies.
Three winning cities will be selected to hold the title of European Capital of Small Retail 2026, representing different population categories:
- Vanguard City: 5 000 - 50 000 inhabitants
- Vibrant City: 50 000 - 250 000 inhabitants
- Visionary City: more than 250 000 inhabitants
They will be awarded the prestigious 2026 title at an award ceremony in Brussels, winning:
A high-profile launch event in their city
A full support package: media coverage, networking, workshops, and more
Europe-wide visibility

- Application deadline: 9 October 2025
- Award Ceremony, Brussels: 28 January 2026
