ALDI Ireland has confirmed it will open its 165th store in Ireland this month. This new €14 million store in Monaghan Town is ALDI’s second store in Monaghan and will create 30 new permanent jobs when it opens on Thursday, 16 October.
The store opens as ALDI prepares to serve its one billionth customer since arriving in Ireland in 1999. ALDI expects to hit the milestone in mid-October, reflecting ALDI’s long-term commitment to Ireland and its promise to bring great value, quality and produce to the communities it operates in across the country.
ALDI in Ireland
Last year, ALDI Ireland celebrated 25 years in Ireland and has grown from an initial two stores in 1999 to now celebrating its 165th store and serving its one billionth Irish shopper this year. The retailer employs over 4,800 people nationwide, with the new Monaghan Store creating an additional 30 jobs in the community. ALDI also works with a network of over 330 suppliers across Ireland, spending over €1 billion with them annually.
Colin Breslin, Managing Director of Operations at ALDI Ireland, said: “As a Monaghan and three-mile house native, I am proud to welcome ALDI’s 165th store to my home county. This is a significant moment for ALDI in Ireland and a testament to the incredible trust Irish shoppers have placed in us. Our brand-new store in Monaghan represents a major local investment and reinforces our commitment to value and quality. We are deeply grateful for the support of the local community and look forward to welcoming customers to our brand-new Monaghan store over the coming days and weeks."
ALDI in Monaghan
ALDI’s newest store, located on Broad Road, is the retailer’s first store in Monaghan Town and second in the county. ALDI first established a presence in Monaghan with the opening of its Carrickmacross store in 2014 and has since spent nearly €24 million in capital investment in the county. ALDI now employs over 60 people locally, with the Carrickmacross store welcoming nearly half a million customers in 2024.
The new 1254qm store features ALDI’s award-winning Project Fresh layout, with wide aisles and hi-spec fixtures and fittings. ALDI shoppers will be able to make use of 91 car parking spaces and 10 electric vehicle charging spaces. ALDI has also begun rolling out self-service checkouts and in-store bakeries at select stores, including the new Monaghan store, to make shopping even more efficient and enjoyable for shoppers.
Recent research from Bounce Insights found that that ALDI is the quickest supermarket for the full shop, with the average weekly shop taking just 37 minutes. The same research also showed that shoppers place a high importance on value for money and product quality, with 70% of ALDI shoppers ranking value for money as one the top three most important factors when deciding where to complete their main grocery shop.
Sustainability
ALDI is equally committed to making sustainability affordable for its customers too. The new store will feature 377m2 solar panels. ALDI’s Carrickmacross store also recently received a major solar panel retrofit, which was successfully completed in September.
Community Support
In addition to its partnership with FoodCloud and Too Good To Go, ALDI’s Community Grants Programme provides each ALDI employee with the opportunity to nominate a charity or community organisation in their local community to receive a €500 ALDI Gift Card. The most recent recipient of this in Monaghan was Steadfast House, a respite service which aims to provide and maintain high quality personalised care and support in a safe environment and within a homely atmosphere for adults with an intellectual disability and/or physical and sensory disability.
Since the Community Grants programme commenced in 2016, over €840,000 has been donated to local charity branches and community groups across Ireland. Receiving charities and organisations range from rescue teams to animal sanctuaries, cancer support to mental health services.
ALDI has also donated over 50,000 meals to local Monaghan charities and community groups through its partnership with FoodCloud, reflecting its ongoing commitment to sustainability and community wellbeing.
