Lidl Ireland in partnership with the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) have officially announced Carrigaline Ladies Gaelic Football Club as the overall winner of the first prize in the Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme 2025.
The scheme offers cash prizes worth more than €80,000 and following a long campaign and tough competition, the club’s outstanding engagement, passion and dedication both on and off the pitch earned them the top prize of €50,000.
Carrigaline LGFA competed with three other clubs for the top spot, each developing their own video to show the passion they have for women in sport and how they would plan to spend the prize to develop their club within their local communities. After a tight competition, communities across the island of Ireland voted, with Carrigaline LGFA receiving the most overwhelming number of votes to claim the top prize. This reward could not come at a better time for Carrigaline LGFA, with their senior ladies team having won the division two league in Cork which is their third consecutive promotion. They will now play in division one from next year onwards.
Three runners-up Gráinne Mhaols Ladies Gaelic Football Club (Clifden, Co. Galway), Lurgan Ladies Gaelic Football Club (Virginia, Co. Cavan), and Navan O’Mahony’s Ladies Gaelic Football Club (Navan, Co. Meath) will each receive €10,000 in funding from Lidl Ireland to invest in their development and facilities.
This initiative, now in its fourth year, was created by Ireland’s market leading discount retailer as part of their longstanding partnership with the LGFA to support grassroots development and raise awareness of the unwavering community spirit within LGFA clubs across the country.
This year’s programme continues the legacy of impact, with more than 740 participating LGFA teams benefitting from new jersey’s worth over €380,000. To date, more than €800,000 has been invested in local teams through the Lidl Plus LGFA Reward Scheme.
Tara O’Connor, Regional Managing Director for Munster at Lidl Ireland, said: “We are delighted to finally announce the winners of this year’s Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme. A huge congratulations to Carrigaline LGFA for showing how impactful grassroots support can be in encouraging young girls to engage with sport from an early age. Thanks to the Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme, communities have the chance to make a real difference to their local LGFA teams, and this passion and dedication has led Carrigaline LGFA to claim the top prize of €50,000 of vital investment.
The driving force behind our longstanding sponsorship of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association has always been the impact we can make in communities across the country. This funding will be vital in upgrading facilities, equipment, and resources at Carrigaline to ensure that the next generation of female athletes can be championed within their clubs and achieve a bright and active future within the LGFA.
Carrigaline LGFA embodies that community pride we see through our national partnership, and it’s great to see this passion and excitement on the build up to the Passage West GAA Ladies Football Blitz 2025 that will be kicking off in September this year.”
Trina Murray, President of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, added:
"The Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme has grown in momentum year after year. This scheme continues to provide crucial support to our clubs, and we’re thrilled to see such strong engagement again this year. Huge congratulations to all the winners, your efforts reflect the passion and purpose at the heart of LGFA clubs across Ireland. We’re delighted to see Carrigaline LGFA earn the top prize of €50,000. This initiative offers an incredible opportunity for communities to demonstrate their support while earning important funds for clubs. It’s been fantastic to witness so many teams get involved and create lasting benefits for their players and facilities.”
Through the Lidl Plus app, registered shoppers collected digital stamps by spending €50 or more in Lidl stores nationwide during February and March this year. Each completed stamp card contributed to a club’s overall total. Clubs that reached a minimum of 50 completed stamp cards were guaranteed a reward, ranging from Lidl-sponsored jerseys to cash funding of up to €5,000.
In 2024, Lidl procured more than €128 million in goods and services from Cork suppliers and has worked to support the LGFA through its partnerships. This year that includes McDaid’s Football Special, a 1L original Football Special bottles featuring the ladies’ Gaelic football artwork for just €1.79 / £1.49 on promotional release in-store from Thursday 26th June, coinciding with LGFA knockout stages, and again from Thursday 31st July ahead of the TG4 All-Ireland Championship Finals.
Since 2016, Lidl has invested over €10 million in LGFA through its ground-breaking partnership, transforming the perception and profile of women’s sport in Ireland.
