With St Patrick’s Day around the corner, Glendalough Distillery is raising a glass to Ireland’s national holiday with the launch of its refreshed packaging for its distinctive Pot Still Irish Whiskey (RRP €65, available at Glendaloughdistillery.com). To mark the launch, the distillery has committed to an ongoing partnership with Rewild Wicklow throughout this year, supporting the planting of native Irish oak trees across County Wicklow.
Through its renewed partnership with Rewild Wicklow, Glendalough Distillery will continue supporting the planting of native Irish oak trees across the county. Over the past six months, the partnership has helped plant nearly 100 native oak trees, contributing to the restoration of local woodlands and supporting the biodiversity of the Wicklow landscape.
Landing in time for St Patrick’s Day celebrations, the updated Glendalough Distillery Pot Still Irish Whiskey bottle design draws inspiration from the native Irish oak forests that shape the whiskey’s flavour, reflecting the deep connection between the distillery, its landscape and the craft behind each bottle.
Crafted in Wicklow Mountains and shaped by the forests that surround the distillery, this whiskey captures a uniquely Irish flavour profile. Matured first in bourbon barrels before beginning finished in slow-toasted Irish oak casks sourced just 30 minutes from the distillery doors, the result is a rich, warming spirit layered with spice, sweetness and toasted wood character. The palate is rich and complex, with flavours of toffee pears, treacle, cinnamon, nutmeg and toasted oak, followed by a long, smooth finish of creamy vanilla, forest fruits and almonds.
On the nose, this whiskey is sweet and citrus-forward with vanilla notes, earthy undertones and oak spice. It’s a whiskey designed for savouring, making it the ideal pour to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with friends and family.
The refreshed packaging marks the final stage of redesign across the distillery’s whiskey range and takes inspiration from the native Irish oak forests of Wicklow where the whiskey’s finishing casks are sourced.
At the heart of this whiskey is Glendalough Distillery’s Irish Oak programme. Working with forestry experts and landowners across Wicklow, the distillery carefully selects mature Irish oak trees, typically between 120 and 160 years old, from biodiverse forests including Ballinacor Estate, Jack’s Wood and Greenan’s Forest. Each tree is harvested under a Continuous Cover Forestry system designed to maintain the long-term health of the forest, with seven new saplings planted for every tree used. Ireland’s maritime climate allows Irish oak to grow faster than most European oak varieties, producing wider growth rings that impart deeper flavour to the whiskey.
Founded in the Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough Distillery is dedicated to reviving Ireland’s distilling heritage through innovation, sustainability and a strong sense of place. Glendalough Distillery has been proudly named Ireland’s Distillery of the Year four years in a row* at the New York International Spirits Competition.
