The arrival of the 2026 season of Calvey's Achill Mountain Lamb marks the return of one of Ireland's most distinctive mountain-reared lambs. Known for its exceptional flavour, complete traceability, and the Calvey family’s hands-on approach from hilltop to tabletop.
Since 1866, six generations of the Calvey family have reared their flock on the rugged mountains of Achill Island. The sheep move freely across the island's unique landscape, grazing on wild Atlantic sea herbs, heather, mountain grasses and native vegetation. It is this natural environment, combined with generations of farming knowledge, that gives Achill Mountain Lamb its distinctive flavour, tenderness and quality.
The Calvey family remains involved in every stage of the journey, from rearing the lambs on Achill's mountains to butchering, preparing, packaging, promoting and delivering every order; each step stays in family hands. Since 1962, every lamb has been butchered in the family's purpose-built abattoir butchery on Achill Island, ensuring complete control over quality and full traceability from pasture to plate.
Martina Calvey of Calvey's Achill Mountain Lamb said: "We're proud to continue a tradition that's been passed down through six generations of our family. We're involved in every step of the journey, from raising our lambs on Achill's mountains to butchering, packing and sending every order ourselves. That means we never lose sight of the quality we're known for. Every year our customers return because they know exactly where their lamb has come from and the care that's gone into producing it."
To celebrate Mayo's long-awaited All-Ireland Senior Football Championship victory, the Calvey family has launched a special limited-edition "Mayo for Sam – Achill for Lamb" Champions Celebration Achill Lamb Victory Box. Priced at €230, including nationwide delivery, the box contains 12kg of new season Achill Mountain Lamb along with a specially commissioned keepsake commemorating Mayo's historic win.
