SuperValu and the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht today launched ‘Get Involved and Make A Difference’ a new campaign to encourage people across the country to join their local TidyTowns group this summer.
The campaign was officially launched in Dalkey by broadcaster Hector Ó hEochagáin, who will be hitting the road this summer to visit TidyTowns groups across Ireland and experience first-hand the incredible work being carried out by volunteers in towns and villages nationwide.
From revitalising shared spaces and protecting local biodiversity, to championing sustainability and building stronger, more connected communities, SuperValu TidyTowns is about so much more than just appearances.
Throughout the summer, Hector will meet the passionate local volunteers and experience first-hand the initiatives that make towns thrive. Along the way, he’ll be lending a hand while uncovering the stories behind the projects, meet the people driving real change and showcase how every effort big or small plays a vital role in shaping proud, resilient communities.
Through the campaign, Hector will highlight not only the positive impact SuperValu TidyTowns has on the appearance and sustainability of communities, but also the friendships, pride and sense of belonging that come from getting involved.
Volunteering with your local TidyTowns group offers opportunities for everyone to contribute in a way that suits their interests, time and skills, whether that's enhancing the environment, planting and landscaping, supporting biodiversity, promoting sustainability initiatives, or helping to create vibrant, welcoming places for people to live, work and visit.
Commenting at the launch Hector Ó hEochagáin said:
"I’m absolutely delighted to team up with SuperValu TidyTowns this summer. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be hitting the road to meet some of the incredible volunteers across the country. I look forward to hearing their stories, seeing firsthand the amazing work they do and, more importantly, lending a hand. I might not be winning any prizes for my handiwork, but I’m proud to support the meaningful work SuperValu TidyTowns delivers, from protecting local biodiversity to building more sustainable communities.
What makes SuperValu TidyTowns so special is that it’s about far more than getting the town looking well. It’s about people coming together, sharing a few laughs, making friendships and creating places they’re proud to call home. This Summer, I’d encourage everyone to get involved with their local TidyTowns group. You’ll be amazed by what can be achieved when people come together and you might even surprise yourself with what you get out of it too.”
Shane Rushe, SuperValu Dalkey, added: “As a local retailer, we see first-hand the incredible commitment and passion volunteers bring to making our community such a great place to live, work and visit. SuperValu TidyTowns is community at its very best. It’s about neighbours supporting one another, taking pride in where they live and working together to make a lasting difference. We would encourage anyone who is interested to get involved and discover the positive impact they can have in their local area.”
A spokesperson for the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht added: “The Department welcomes this initiative encouraging participation in SuperValu TidyTowns and continuing to highlight the great work that TidyTowns volunteers undertake on behalf of their communities.
The SuperValu TidyTowns Competition is the longest‑established, community‑led sustainability initiative in Ireland. Administered by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, the Competition currently inspires over 30,000 volunteers across almost 1,000 committees, who collectively give over 3 million hours of their time every year to improve their communities nationwide demonstrating the power of local action to deliver real, lasting impact.”
