Posted on: 15 Oct 2020

The new state-of-the-art store revitalises local history through the preservation of several one-of-a-kind archaeological remains

This morning, Dublin LGFA star, Sinéad Goldrick was on site to officially open the new state-of-the-art Lidl store at Aungier Street in Dublin city centre. The fourth Lidl store to serve the community of Dublin city centre, Lidl Aungier Street has brought 24 new jobs as well as an investment of more than €3 million to the locality.

Not your ‘standard’ Lidl, the store features several significant archaeological finds that can be seen throughout the store as customers shop the best prices in the country. Dating back as far as the 11thcentury, Lidl has invested in protecting these unique historical remains including the 18th century Aungier Theatre staircase, 11th century sunken-floored structure and the 18th century Longford Street Arches.

Where ancient history meets modern design, Lidl Aungier Street has been built with sustainability in mind. The modern building is fully equipped with an ISO 50001 certified Energy Management System as well as a spacious interior layout, high ceilings and wide aisles creating a comfortable shopping experience for customers.

To mark the opening, Lidl Aungier Street welcomed representatives from the Simon Community and ALONE to accept a donation of €500 each to support the ongoing work they do for the homeless and elderly people living alone in the Dublin City area and beyond.

Welcoming the new Lidl store, Sinéad Goldrick said; “I am delighted to officially open Lidl Aungier Street this morning. It is incredible to see such a commercial appreciation for the archaeological environment in the preservation and display of the archaeological finds – what a wonderful way to keep our local history alive! The store is a very welcomed addition to the locality and I am very much looking forward to the smell of freshly baked breads and pastries from the store’s bakery each day.”

Speaking to the opening of their 164th store in Ireland, Konrad Dudek, Store Manager at Lidl Aungier Street said; “After months of preparation, it is fantastic to officially open our brand new Aungier Street store. The past number of months have been challenging for everyone so it is nice to have some good news to share and even nicer that we can bring quality produce at unbeatable prices to our customers in Dublin City as we have throughout the country for the past 20 years. The team and I look forward to meeting and serving the community of southside Dublin City.”
