Lidl set to open Ireland’s first top energy-rated supermarket in Graiguecullen, Carlow

Posted on: 11 Jun 2026

Lidl Ireland today confirmed it will open a brand-new, state-of-the-art store in Graiguecullen, Carlow, on Thursday, 18th June. Demonstrating the retailer’s commitment to sustainability, Lidl Graiguecullen will be the first top energy-rated supermarket of its kind in Ireland, achieving the highest A0 Building Energy Rating (BER), following the opening of Ireland’s first net zero supermarket at Lidl Maynooth in November last year.

The new store, located on the Castlecomer road in Graiguecullen represents a €10M investment in the local area and will create 25 new permanent jobs.

Local ladies Gaelic football stars, including Carlow LGFA captain Róisín Bailey and Laois LGFA captain Andrea Moran, will have the honour of cutting the ribbon on the brand new store at 8am on Thursday 18 June. Shoppers will be able to avail of opening day offers and the first ten customers through the doors will receive complementary Lidl gift vouchers to redeem in-store.

The new store in Graiguecullen reflects Lidl’s established ‘concept’ design which features a spacious 1,499 sqm sales floor area, offering a premier shopping experience for customers self-service checkouts, long tills, two Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) machines, an off licence, customer restrooms with baby changing facilities and the popular in-store bakery offering fresh baked goods daily.

Sustainability is a key focus for the new store as the retail unit incorporates the highest environmental standards as a Zero Emission Building (ZEB), achieving Ireland’s new top-tier A0 Building Energy Rating (BER), making it the first supermarket of its kind in Ireland. The store reflects a future-proofed design, ensuring exceptionally low energy demand, maximum thermal efficiency, and minimal carbon emissions. Within the spacious car park, the provision of a number of bike spaces and electric vehicle (EV) charging points further supports sustainable transport options for customers and store teams.

Ahead of the store opening Niall Murray, Regional Managing Director for Lidl Ireland said:

“We are incredibly proud to finally unveil our new Graiguecullen store and bring Lidl’s ‘More to Value’ proposition to the heart of the local community. Opening on June 18th, this store represents a substantial investment in Carlow and Laois, and as our highest energy-rated store in the country, we’re sure that it will serve the community for years to come and contribute positively to the local area.”

Carlow Ladies Gaelic Football Captain Róisín Bailey added:

"I am thrilled to be officially opening the new Lidl store in Graiguecullen on June 18th. As a Carlow player, it’s fantastic to see this kind of investment in the local area. Lidl has been a massive supporter of the LGFA for more than a decade and I’m really looking forward to meeting the locals and welcoming everyone into the new store!"

Lidl opened its first Carlow store in 2000 and currently employs more than 60 team members across its growing network in the region. This new Graiguecullen store represents a continued commitment to providing high-quality, affordable produce to the heart of the county.

Lidl’s investment in the region contributes significantly to the local economy. In 2025, Lidl Ireland confirmed that a total of €360 million worth of goods and services was procured from suppliers and business partners across the region. Key regional suppliers include Seery’s Heatherfield Ltd, a family run bakery who have been supplying all 235 Lidl stores across the island of Ireland with the highest quality cakes and puddings since 2020.

Lidl Ireland was named a ‘Top Employer’ by the Top Employers Institute in 2026 for the sixth year running. The retailer was also named #1 Value for Money Organisation in the 2026 RepTrak Ireland study, and was named Most Sustainable Retailer in Ireland, ranking #6 in the RepTrak® Sustainability Index for 2025.

The new store opening in Castlecomer Road in Graiguecullen forms part of Lidl Ireland’s ambitious expansion plans and sees the retailer expand its network to 193 stores across Ireland. Lidl Ireland currently employs more than 6,000 employees in its store network, Head Office in Tallaght and three distribution centres and regional offices in Charleville, Newbridge and Mullingar.
