Posted on: 24 Jan 2022

Tesco Ireland will invest €5 million and create 60 new jobs with the opening of its new environmentally friendly store at White Pines, Rathfarnham, Dublin next month.

The new roles will be recruited locally and will bring Tesco employment in Dublin to almost 4,000, with over 13,000 employed nationally.  Recruitment remains open for White Pines and other roles and those interested in applying can find out more at Tesco.ie/careers

With Tesco approaching 25 years of operating in Ireland this year, White Pines, which will open on Monday 14th February, will bring the number of Tesco stores in the country to 152. The neighbourhood supermarket is located at the new White Pines residential development, is fully powered and heated by renewable electricity, features 11,000 square feet of shopping space, 60 free car parking spaces for customers, two electric vehicle charging stations which can accommodate up to four cars, as well as bicycle parking.

An Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar, welcomed the new jobs and said: “This further job creation and investment by Tesco is welcome news, building on its significant employment growth in 2021 and delivering new opportunities for career-development within the retail sector. I wish the team all the very best with the new store opening, which will deliver significant benefits to the local economy, and wider community.”

Tesco Ireland CEO, Kari Daniels, said: “I am delighted to announce the opening of our brand-new White Pines superstore in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin, which will create 60 jobs.

Powered and heated by renewable energy, White Pines will be our 152nd store in Ireland and will offer a broad range of great quality and value products for our customers.

We’re looking forward to serving the Rathfarnham community for many years to come.”

The store will include customer favourites, such as an extensive fresh food offering, in-store bakery and a host of grocery, ambient, chilled, and frozen foods. It will also provide a new front-of-store offering including partnerships with Cuisine de France and Denny for convenient food and healthy options for customers on the go.

In line with Tesco’s sustainability strategy, the store will feature the latest in technology to continue its ambition to achieve net zero in its own operations by 2035.  The store has been designed to reflect carbon-efficiencies, receiving an A energy rating due to the inclusion of the latest in LED lighting, and is fully powered and heated by energy efficient technology.

Tesco White Pines will be managed by Paul Kinahan, a highly experienced store manager, who previously managed the Tesco store in Clane, Co. Kildare. Paul was an integral part of the team who opened Liffey Valley, Tesco’s flagship store in Ireland, as well as holding other roles in the convenience arm of the business during his career with the company.

The Tesco Community Fund will support the local area with three local causes benefiting from donations upon store opening. The Community Fund has already donated over €6 million to local community groups, charities, and good causes around Ireland.

No good food will go to waste from the White Pines store. Tesco will work with its partner FoodCloud, to redistribute food surplus from the store to those who need it in the community. Working with almost 400 charity partners nationwide Tesco has donated the equivalent of 15 million meals to charitable causes - from breakfast clubs to meals on wheels to community kitchens and food banks.

The new team at White Pines will join Tesco’s continued efforts to support its Charity Partner, Children’s Health Foundation Temple Street. Since the partnership began in 2014, through the generosity of colleague and customer fundraising, Tesco has donated over €7 million to Temple Street, which has provided support for medical equipment including a CT scanner, ultrasound scanners, patient monitors and more.
