Tiernan’s SuperValu Fairways leads the way with Louth’s first Bulk Reverse Vending Machine

Posted on: 07 Oct 2026

Tiernan’s SuperValu in the Fairways Centre has become the first supermarket in Louth to launch a high-capacity bulk reverse vending machine, enabling customers, local clubs and charities to conveniently recycle larger quantities of plastic containers and aluminium cans in a single visit.

Supported by Re-turn, the new machine can process up to 100 containers per minute, enabling local Louth clubs and charities to return containers more efficiently, with local groups already utilising the service to maximise fundraising.

SuperValu Fairways customers have recycled over 2.8 million containers since the launch of the Deposit Return Scheme in February 2024, and the installation of a bulk machine further demonstrates the store’s commitment to sustainability and the local area.

Richard Tiernan, Tiernan’s SuperValu Fairways, said: “I’m delighted to announce that we have installed our very first high-capacity bulk reverse vending machine, which represents a real win for our community. This machine enables customers to return a larger number of containers in a single visit, making recycling more convenient while promoting sustainable habits. The installation marks an important step forward in achieving our sustainability goals, with the capacity to now process over 3.5 million containers annually. What makes this milestone even more meaningful is the benefit it brings to local clubs and charities, who can now return containers at a faster rate, raising much needed funds.”

Since the launch of the DRS initiative, over 700 million containers have been recycled across 575 SuperValu and Centra stores.
